If
you suffer from chronic wounds, Cabrini Medical Center
can help speed the healing process with our hyperbaric
oxygen therapy (HBO). HBO treatment especially helps
the healing process of lower extremity diabetic ulcers,
and helps skin grafts to take. Patients with cancers
of all types are using HBO treatments to help revitalize
damaged tissues after radiation treatments. Cabrini
was the first hospital in Manhattan to pioneer a comprehensive
HBO medicine program, and is still one of the only available
programs in New York City.
How
HBO works: The patient lies down on a stretcher
inside an acrylic chamber for approximately one and
a half hours under close supervision. They may drink
a beverage, watch TV and communicate by telephone during
their treatment. In the chamber the patient breathes
100% oxygen at greater than normal atmospheric pressure,
which allows higher concentrations of oxygen to spread
into the body's tissues, enhancing tissue growth and
repair. In addition, the high oxygen percentages help
new blood vessel formation to further speed the wound
healing process.
Cabrini
is outfitted with SeChrist Monoplace Hyperbaric Chambers
that enable us to provide safe and intensive treatment
to outpatients on a referral basis as well as to acutely
ill inpatients. The HBO unit is located on the first
floor of Cabrini Medical Center next to our Emergency
Department, and it is staffed with Emergency Medicine
Physicians trained in HBO and Certified Hyperbaric Technologists
(CHTs). Hours of operation are from 8am to 6pm including
late evenings and weekends according to patients varying
schedules. Call us for any questions regarding this
wonderful treatment at 212 995-6266.
Cabrini
Medical Center is "dedicated to healing New York
one neighbor at a timeSM."
