ARE YOU IN COMPLIANCE WITH THE BELL COMMISSION?
We are the only hospital in Manhattan that remains in full compliance with the Bell Commission. In fact, we instituted some of the changes before, such as "capping admissions", capping the number of patients to follow, and back in 1986 we started to send home interns at 2:00PM the day after being on call. In 1989, we instituted the Night Float system (NF), and this system allows significant reduction in the work hours for both interns and residents. NIGHT FLOAT WORKS SUNDAY TO FRIDAY NIGHT FROM 11:00PM TO THE MORNING. The only two days where the NF team does not work is on Fridays and Saturdays. Each intern is guaranteed to have one day of the weekend off; and if the intern is on call for 24-hours (that is Friday or Saturday), he/she is off the next day.
To be on call means admitting patients from 3:00PM to 10:00PM (which is the cut-off time); patients admitted after 10:00PM are to be worked up by the NF team.
